A MAN who sped away from police in his vehicle in a bid to try to avoid detection has been put off the road for 18 months after being convicted of high-range drink driving.

Daryl Edward Wilson, 44, of the Lagoon Road, The Lagoon, appeared in person and unrepresented in Bathurst Local Court before magistrate Michael Allen.
Police facts tendered to the court revealed that in the early hours of November 20 last year police were patrolling Rocket Street when they observed a dark blue Ford Falcon XR6 travelling in a westerly direction turn right into Havannah Street.
Police noted the car only had one occupant, Wilson, who was driving the vehicle.
As police passed his car, they slowed down and began to turn around.
They saw Wilson accelerate harshly in what appeared to be an attempt to get away or avoid them.
Police turned towards Havannah Street to follow the car, which was still accelerating away, turning corners and failing to indicate as it turned into various streets.
Police continued to follow the car with their lights and sirens activated, with the driver eventually pulling over in Logan Street.
When the car stopped, police observed the front tyres had popped off the rims.
Wilson then got out of the car and began to run down Logan Street with police giving chase yelling out “stop, police”. He yelled out “no”.
Wilson continued running up Logan Street, through a vacant block, and police caught up, tackling him to the ground.
They then handcuffed him, walked him back to the police vehicle and asked him why he had tried to run off.
“I’ve been drinking, that’s all,” he said.
A roadside breath test produced a positive result and Wilson was arrested.
Police tried to put him in the police vehicle but Wilson claimed he had an old shearing injury that prevented him from getting into the car. Eventually he got into the car of his own accord.
While at the police station, Wilson told police he had been drinking white wine since the previous evening, and didn’t know how much he had consumed.
His breath analysis came back at 0.158, placing him in the high range.
Wilson disagreed with the reading and asked to be taken to Bathurst Base Hospital for a blood sample so he could have it analysed at his own cost.
He was subsequently taken to Bathurst Base Hospital by police.
Mr Allen convicted Wilson, disqualifying him from driving for a period of 18 months with Section 225(3) of the Roads and Transport Act to apply. He was also placed on a Section 9 Bond for 16 months.
