Peter John Knight, 29, was detected at Gilgandra where he was charged with high-range drink-driving and driving while disqualified.

Eight months later in January he was again detected driving while disqualified at Cranebrook.

In Dubbo Local Court, magistrate Alexander Mijovich imposed concurrent maximum jail sentences of two years for the high-range drink-driving and the two driving while disqualified - subsequent offence - convictions.

The prosecution withdrew a charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol or any other drug laid at the same time as the other charges at Gilgandra.

Knight appeared before the court via audiovisual link from prison, with the court hearing the fresh offending in January had caused a breach of his parole.

The defence said Knight had recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.279 at Gilgandra.

There was no collision but there was moving lanes, the court heard.

The journey was significantly short and no other cars were actually put in danger, although there was the risk of that, the solicitor said.

Knight had been detected driving while disqualified at Cranebrook through a random breath test, not because of his manner of driving, the court heard.

A pre-sentence report was clear about how unfortunate Knight's upbringing was, the solicitor said.

He had an alcohol problem and was perhaps on his way to improvement but his grandfather had died in April last year, the court heard.

The defence asked that "the court not impose a crushing sentence".

The solicitor also asked that any term of imprisonment start from that day and that the court make a finding of special circumstances of grief and risk of institutionalisation.

The magistrate told Knight that although his grandfather had died last year, the drink-driving offence was his fifth since 2008.

It was also Knight's fourth and fifth driving while disqualified offence since 2008, Mr Mijovich said.

He told Knight he was a "recidivist" and did not accept there were special circumstances.

Knight was convicted of the three charges and sentenced to two years' imprisonment with a non-parole period of 18 months, making him eligible for release on August 17 next year.

Knight was disqualified for a further two years for each of the driving while disqualified convictions and for five years for the high-range drink-driving offence.

The magistrate noted new laws introduced by Parliament.

"If there is any hope of you getting a licence [after the disqualification period] any further offence would knock it out completely," Mr Mijovich said.
