Police were called to the brawl between two men near the corner of South Terrace and Lone Pine Avenue at 12.10pm.
Inspector Bruce Grassick of Orange police said the catalyst for the brawl was the alleged assault of a 16-year-old girl at a party in South Terrace early yesterday morning.
Police say that following a verbal confrontation between the two men, a 40-year-old Orange man armed himself with two golf clubs and attacked a 37-year-old Wagga Wagga man.
Inspector Grassick said the 40-year-old allegedly swung a golf club hitting the 37-year-old around the head, inflicting lacerations which had to be treated at Orange hospital.
Police say the 40-year-old also sustained a puncture wound to the forearm.
“At this stage we are not sure how that wound was inflicted and whether or not it was by a broken golf club - but our investigations will continue,” Inspector Grassick said.
Both men were initially treated at the scene by Orange paramedics.
They were then transferred to Orange hospital in separate ambulances.
Inspector Grassick said both men were released following treatment.
On his release from hospital, police arrested the 40-year-old man who was being questioned at Orange police station late yesterday afternoon.
Inspector Grassick said the men were known to each other.
A crime scene was established in the area by Orange detectives who are continuing their investigations.
A 16-year-old female who was allegedly the victim in the initial assault was a witness to yesterday’s melee and is helping police with inquiries.
