Emergency services responded about 9.30pm Saturday following reports the Wattle Street house was alight.
Upon arrival about 16 firefighters on board trucks from Dubbo and Delroy stations saw "large volumes of smoke" coming from the unoccupied property, according to NSW Fire and Rescue Dubbo station officer Mick Medlin.
Flames had taken hold of a back room, he said, but firefighters in breathing appratus entered the property and extinguished the fire within a short time.
"The house was vacant and there was no threat to surrounding properties," he said.
"Being an older house with asbestos, firefighters had to taken extra precautions when it came to decontaminating equipment and the like."
Firefighters remained on the scene until about 11pm to make sure the scene was secure and there was no chance of a flare-up, Station Officer Medlin said.
But crews were forced to return to the same house early Sunday morning to put out a second fire at the residence, he said.
"We don't believe the second fire was a reignition of the first," he said.
A spokesperson for Orana Local Area Command confirmed the fires were being treated as suspicious.
Witnesses or anyone who believed they had information that could help with the police investigation was asked to contact Crime Stoppers or Dubbo Police Station.
