Ms Buckman recently completed the Trauma Nursing Core Course, an internationally recognised qualification in emergency nursing, which she said "demystify trauma".

"I did the course so I could feel less intimidated and have a larger role to play in trauma," she said.

Very few EEN attempt this course, let alone complete it and Ms Buckman is now enrolling to complete her Registered Nurse (RN) conversion.

The woman, affectionately nicknamed 'Cassowary' because of her trademark blue hair has worked in disability services, construction and as a digital video editor, but said nursing is where she will stay.

"This is my fourth career and I'll never do anything else for as long as I live," she said.

"I wanted a career where I could care for people and get paid to do it- Iike looking after people.

"Every single day I get to see and experience different things and even on bad days I'm sure this is what I want to do.

"I can't wait to see where my career takes me."

Ms Buckman's nursing career began eight years ago when she began working as an Assistant In Nursing at Gilgandra Hospital.

Two years later she moved to Dubbo Base in 2009 and she started working in the Emergency Department at an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse in 2010.

In 2012 Ms Buckman was diagnosed with breast cancer, but fought it and won and said the experience has made her a better nurse.

People attracted her to the job and she said they and her co-workers are what make the job fun.

"I see it as a real privilege to be part of people's lives for the short time I spend with them in the Emergency Department," she said.

"We often see people at the worst times, after accidents, or unexpected illness.

"To be able to see people have treatment and recover is so rewarding.

"There isn't a shift that goes by that I don't smile or have a laugh with a patient."
