About 12.30am on Wednesday (28 January 2015), a 37-year-old man was walking on Castlereagh Street.
The man has told police he was attacked from behind by a number of people.
He sustained multiple stab wounds.
The alleged assailants left the scene, and the injured man ran into nearby Charles Street.
Witnesses heard the man calling for help, placed him in a car, and took him to Coonabarabran Hospital.
He was later transferred to Dubbo Base Hospital, where he has undergone surgery.
The man is believed to be in a serious but stable condition.
Police from Mudgee Local Area Command are investigating the incident.
Following inquiries, officers arrested a 21-year-old man in Coonabarabran about 4.10pm today (Friday 30 January 2015).
He was taken to Coonabarabran Police Station, where he was charged with attempted murder.
The man was refused bail to appear in Dubbo Local Court tomorrow.
