THE life of Wellington-born, internationally famous Australian author, Colleen McCullough has been celebrated at the Macquarie Regional Library.

A stand of Ms McCullough's top reads, including the top-selling The Thorn Birds, have been presented on the library's red wall, said Macqurie Regional Library director, John Bayliss.

"We're celebrating her life, her contribution to Australian literature and showcasing her works," he said.

"She used Wellington and the districts as a background to Thorn Birds, which was her blockbuster book that shot her into fame.

"A lot of her books were set in rural Australia, which also put Australia on the map."

Mr Bayliss described her books as "easy to read, engaging and appealing to a lot of people".

Ms McCullough's The Thorn Birds, a romantic Australian saga, has sold 30 million copies worldwide and is the highest-selling Australian book, helped by the popular mini-series.

Her 25 books included a deeply researched fictional series set in Ancient Rome, and her final book, Bittersweet, about four sisters in 1920s New South Wales was published in 2013.
