Willow McCarthy, 5 will be starting Dubbo Public school, and said he is very excited.
He said he was most looking forward to playing, school discos and getting a year 6 buddy.
Willow’s two older siblings, Liberty 9, and Pollyanna 8, will be starting year 5 and year 3 respectively at Dubbo Public this year.
His mum, Emma McCarthy said it was very exciting for Willow to start school.
“He’s got a few friends from preschool who will also be attending Dubbo Public, which is great.
“He’s well adjusted and cannot wait to start,” she said.
Dubbo mum, Kate Foran said her child, Oliver, 6 was really looking forward to starting Kindergarten at St Mary’s Primary School.
“It’s all very exciting. He’s the baby of the family, so there are a few mixed emotions,” Ms Foran, who also attended St Mary’s when she was in primary school, said.
“But it’s definitely a milestone and he’s ready.
“His older siblings have already worked out a buddy system to help him.”
Ms Foran said Oliver was most looking forward to going to the school canteen and buying his lunch.
“It’s a great school and he’s busting to go. He’s even got a few friends from preschool and his older siblings are there, so we’re not worried at all.
“He feels like a grown up.”
University of Sydney Professor of Teacher Education and the Arts, Robyn Ewing, said some kindergarten children would feel tentative about a range of aspects of school.
“Many schools now have orientation programs to help children adjust to the school day and understand its components. It’s important for parents to talk through any of the child’s questions and anxieties and to be patient,” Professor Ewing said.
