SYDNEY SIEGE: When it comes to exclusive interviews, commercial television networks simply don't pay as much as they used to. Back in 2006, Beaconsfield miners Brant Webb and Todd Russell received a reported $2.6 million to tell their story to Channel Nine and its print stablemates Woman's Day, The Australian Woman's Weekly and The Bulletin. Now, News Corp reports that Sydney siege survivor Marcia Mikhael has been signed by Channel Seven for $400,000, while John O'Brien will get $100,000. Fairfax Media, however, is reliably informed by multiple sources that the real amounts are substantially lower. Read more here
CELEBRITY: Australian actress Melissa George, who starred as Rosie in the critically acclaimed ABC drama The Slap, has revealed that she didn't hesitate when offered the chance to play the same role in the US adaptation.
CELEBRITY: Ellen DeGeneres has lambasted a Christian pastor who accused her of pushing a gay agenda on her popular television show. The television host and comedian took a moment to return serve at an article written by Larry Tomczak for the Christian Post titled: 'Are you aware of the avalanche of gay programming assaulting your home?'

BASKETBALL: Dubbo's Neve Tratt has returned home from the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup with a gold medal and a ticket to New Zealand after starring for her NSW Osprey side. The Ospreys, which also had Dubbo's Tim Griffiths as assistant coach, went through the tournament undefeated and despite a scare in the grand final, took home the gold medal.
CRICKET: Ben Patterson and his NSW/ACT under-19s side have enjoyed mixed results during the first four rounds of the Cricket Australia under-19 National Championships at Adelaide. Patterson and Cowra quick Jacob McNaught both made the side which has so far recorded two wins and two losses.
CRICKET: Newtown Gold ensured they stayed level with Rugby at the top of the Kelly Cup table with a comprehensive nine-wicket domination of CYMS on Saturday. The Gold Tigers rolled the Cougars for just 80 and then cruised to the total inside 13 overs for the loss of just one wicket.
CRICKET: The South Dubbo Hornets won a low-scoring thriller on Saturday, edging past RSL-Colts by just one wicket. Batting first Colts could only manage 86 with Andrew Cusack tearing through the lower order to claim 5-8 from five overs. In a seemingly straightforward run chase Souths found themselves in all sorts of trouble at 9-76 but number 10 Nathan Astri hit 19 not out to get his side across the line.
CRICKET: A four-day cricket extravaganza began yesterday with the opening of the inaugural under-13s and under-14s State Challenge at Dubbo and Narromine. Seven matches were played in Dubbo and one in Narromine as the best young players in the state set of in their quest to become champions of NSW and the ACT.

8.17: Here's what's making agricultural news this week
DROUGHT IN NORTH WESTERN NSW: Lack of rain in northern NSW means farmers have not put in a summer crop, now they are desperate for rainfall to plant a winter crop. Walgett has only received five millimetres of rainfall in the first three weeks of January. In the same period, Brewarrina recorded 13.9 mm and Coonamble's total so far was only 9.6 mm.
LLS BOARD: The board of the central west Local Land Services (LLS) met in Dubbo last week, to meet for the first strategic planning day. The board, including leadership team, managers and team leaders met to develop local strategies in order to meet local needs.
BEEF PRICES ON THE RISE: Good rainfall and a shortage of stock has resulted in rising beef prices across New South Wales. Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) manager of national livestock reporting services, Damon Holmes said beef prices had risen right across the state.
CSG: Farmers are thrilled with the news that Santos is considering ditching their assets and selling a stake of the Narrabri Gas Project (NGP). Liverpool Plains farmer, Phil Herbert said there have been indications that Santos looking for asset sales to balance their books.

Approximately half a million dollars will be injected into the Dubbo economy by the State Challenge cricket tournament that is being held in the city this week.
More than 1000 people, including 250 players and coaches arrived on Sunday for the tournament which got underway yesterday and will continue until Thursday.
It is the first year the State Challenge has been held for the 13 and 14-years age groups and is planned to become an annual event. There are discussions between organising bodies Cricket Australia, Cricket NSW and Cricket ACT and Dubbo City Council about Dubbo becoming the permanent host.
The city is seen as the perfect venue because it is centrally located for participants, has outstanding facilities and plentiful accommodation.
"The facilities here are perfect and Dubbo City Council has been very accommodating,"
- Cricket NSW male youth programs manager Michael Maclennan said.

CRIME: An 87-year-old Bendigo man who sexually abused his daughter in the 1950s and 1960s has been jailed for 18 months. He will serve a non-parole period of eight months.
ACCIDENT: Orange police are urging people to take extra precautions during the school holidays following a horror weekend on district roads and recreation areas in which four people lost their lives, including a 43-year-old Orange man.
ENVIRONMENT: A housing developer has rejected an offer to sell land to a group of Ormiston residents who wanted to buy the land to save 27 koala trees from being bulldozed.
ABDUCTION: A man and a woman faced court on Monday after a 17-year-old girl was abducted from her car in Withers on Sunday morning, January 18.
COURT: If Orange City Council had approved a toilet block for Robertson Park then Samuel Jordan Sweeting would not have found himself in Orange Local Court according to his solicitor Mick Madden. Sweeting appeared before the magistrate, Terry Lucas, on Monday, charged with assault for headbutting a security guard at the Lords Place taxi rank.
ACCIDENT: A man has died following an off-road trail bike crash in Orange on Sunday. About 6pm a number of family and friends had been trail bike riding through the Mullion Range State Forest, Long Point Road in Mullion Creek, about 18 kilometres north of Orange.
COURT: Police allege Matthew John Michael was found with stolen goods and drugs in his possession mere hours after he was given bail in Orange Local Court last week. According to police facts, officers found methamphetamines, cannabis, chainsaws and a motorbike suspected of being stolen at Michael’s Bletchington Street home after they executed a search warrant.

STATE ELECTION: No coal seam gas mining would take place in Dubbo or anywhere in NSW if the Greens have their way, according to Greens candidate Matt Parmeter. Mr Parmeter said it is crucial that voters understand where candidates stand when it comes to the critical issue of CSG and he said it doesn't get any simpler than the Greens' message of no coal seam gas.
SALVATION ARMY: As the new Salvation Army rural chaplains, husband and wife duo Jeff and Sharilyn Bush will work to bring support and company to the Dubbo region. "We're a caring ear. We'll go and hear their stories and it's through that we hear their pain," Captain Jeff Bush said.
COURT: A young woman has been told speeding or using a mobile phone while driving was "arrogance" as she lost an appeal against her licence suspension in Dubbo Local Court. She accrued demerit points for negligent driving, speeding and using a mobile phone in separate incidents in a period of less than three years. The 19-year-old's licence was suspended and she lodged an appeal.
WOMAN TRADES LOCAL LIFE FOR ARMY: A Dubbo woman who traded beauty therapy for a career in the Australian Army is serving her first operational deployment in Afghanistan. Lance Corporal Natalie Hudson said she was looking for adventure and a different lifestyle when she joined the Australian Army in 2011. Lance Corporal Hudson, from the 8th/12th Regiment Royal Australian Artillery based in Darwin, was working as a beauty therapist before meeting with some people who told her about the army lifestyle while she was travelling in the Top End.
WATER POLICY: Dubbo City Council is developing its plans to ensure a consistent water supply for the city's growing population - and the community has been invited to comment. The future of Dubbo's water management is outlined in the Water Management and Trading Strategy, the Demand Management Plan and the Drought Management Plan which are currently on public exhibition.
HORRIFIC WEEKEND ON ROADS: A double fatality at Dubbo on Saturday was among a series of devastating road incidents which have prompted police to issue a warning for road users ahead of the Australia Day long weekend road safety operation. A horrific weekend on NSW roads saw eight people die in seven fatal accidents while several were left in hospital with serious injuries sustained in other crashes.
TRUCKING INDUSTRY: Nominations and voter registrations are open until February 10 for a trucking industry election and eligible industry members at Dubbo and across the country are being urged to have their say. Australian Trucking Association (ATA) chairwoman Noelene Watson said the 2015 poll was a critical opportunity for owner-drivers and small fleet operators to have their say about the industry's future.
WAIT TIME IN EMERGENCY: Despite a marked improvement on the previous year, the percentage of patients leaving Dubbo Hospital's emergency ward within four hours continues to fall short of a national benchmark for acceptable waiting times. Most recent figures showing emergency department performance for the July to September 2014 quarter indicate just over two-thirds of patients (67 per cent) who presented at Dubbo Hospital emergency department left within four hours.

Trangie and Nyngan will get to 34. Trangie has an 80 per cent chance of less than one mm and high winds in the morning. Nyngan has an 80 per cent chance of five to 10 mm.
COBAR / BOURKE: are not as lucky on the showers front. Cobar has cloud increasing, reaching a top of 34 with a 40 per cent chance of less than one mm. Bourke will get to 38 on a mostly sunny day with a 40 per cent chance of less than one mm.
