The YWCA NSW is inviting registrations for the latest eight-week session of its Encore program.
The program, designed for women who have experienced breast cancer at any time in their lives, has in past years attracted a total of more than 100 women at Dubbo, the YWCA reports.
As the program prepares to return to the city next month, the YWCA NSW has cited a recent study comparing two groups of breast cancer survivors - active and non-active.
The study, the results of which were published by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, showed that exercise led to improvement in Al-induced arthralgia (pain in a joint) in previously inactive breast cancer survivors, the organisation reports.
"Encore supports the well-being of women after the trauma of breast cancer surgery and or treatment in a nurturing and supportive environment," YWCA NSW Encore manager Kate Guthrey said.
Feedback showed that 100 per cent of participants felt the program had helped them, she said.
Encore's land-based activities focused on mobility and flexibility, areas that were affected by surgery and treatment of breast cancer, she said.
Hydrotherapy exercises incorporated aerobic and resistance, two activities that research supported as being most beneficial, she said.
The manager encouraged women to give Encore a try, saying the program could be tailored to all fitness levels, from the fit to those with inhibited movement.
"It's two hours for women to come along, have fun and exercise," Ms Guthrey said.
Encore starts at Dubbo on February 5 and will run weekly between 6pm and 8pm until March 26.
Places are still available and participation is free but women must register by calling 9285 6264 or 1800 305 150, or by emailing encore@ywcansw.com.au.
The YWCA advised that with medical clearance required, it was important to register as soon as possible in order to secure a place.
