Doctors and police say laws curtailing the drinking habits of Sydney revellers should be adopted at nightspots across NSW, despite venues reporting that trade has been crippled.

The call came as Acting Premier Troy Grant flip-flopped on whether the government was open to changing controversial regime, after plans to review it earlier than planned triggered a maelstrom of criticism.

Strict alcohol laws were introduced in central Sydney and Kings Cross last February after the one-punch deaths of Thomas Kelly and Daniel Christie. Licensed premises must lock out patrons from 1.30am and stop serving alcohol at 3am.

The measures were due to be assessed in February next year but the government has called an earlier review for June, when it will assess one year of crime data.

Royal Australasian College of Surgeons spokesman Danny Cass said despite the successful central Sydney laws, the community "still has a problem with alcohol".

"We call for … an extension [of the laws] to other areas, both in western Sydney and places such as Melbourne and in Queensland," said Professor Cass, who is head trauma surgeon at the Children's Hospital at Westmead.

NSW Police Association president Scott Weber said lockout laws should be broadened to Parramatta, Campbelltown and "the rest of NSW that is being affected" by booze-fuelled violence.

"This [law] saves lives. This is about safety, not profit, the government needs to come forward and do … its job," he said.

Mr Weber said the Police Federation of Australia would lobby federal politicians to seek support for a national expansion of the laws. Police unions in each state would also call for the reforms, he said.

St Vincent's Hospital is also seeking an extension of the laws beyond central Sydney, and the Australian Medical Association NSW has previously called for such a move.

Mr Grant did not respond when asked if the government would consider applying the lockout laws to other areas.

On Monday, Mr Grant's office told Fairfax Media the government would review the laws in June. But speaking on 2GB radio on Tuesday, Mr Grant said he was "not quite sure" where such reports had come from.

Asked if the government intended to review the laws, he told 2GB "we're not, in many regards". But he went on to say the government would assess "what laws are working and if … laws [aren't] working then I'm sure [people] would want us to address those".

Australian Hotels Association liquor and policing director John Green said assault rates across NSW were at their lowest levels in 17 years.

He said communities had adopted their own solutions to addressing alcohol-related violence, and "calls to treat country towns like Kings Cross are ridiculous".

Cassandra Wilkinson of Keep Sydney Open, which advocates on behalf of live music and performance venues, said such businesses were suffering and should be exempt from the regime.
