RUGBY has maintained top spot on the second grade ladder heading into Christmas after scoring a tight win in their contest with RSL-Colts at Lady Cutler 1.
Chasing Colts' day one score of 9-210, Rugby wrapped up the win in the 61st over of the day but lost eight wickets in doing so.
The win was set up by their top order, with Dale Watmore (41) and Charlie Kempston (27) putting on 54 runs for the opening wicket before receiving support from Lachlan Harper (48) and Rod Leonard (35) in the middle order.
Rugby lost their way shortly after as they battled to 7-184 but some late runs from John Hausia (24) and Glenn Shepherd (16) got them within range before Shepherd and Garry Goodman (22no) got them over the line.
Rather than call the match over once the runs had been scored, Rugby batted on and finished the day on 9-240.
Geoff Wheeler toiled hard in a losing cause for Colts, finishing with 5-62 off 16.2 overs.

Brant Mann took three wickets, including the vital scalp of Jaspal Bansal, to help Macquarie score a 66-run win over CYMS.
The victory moves the Blues into the top three at the mid-season break, while for CYMS they lose pace with Rugby in the battle for the minor premiership.
After they made 8-229 on day one Macquarie went into the field and started strongly, with skipper Ben Calder bowling seven maidens in a spell of 10 overs to restrict CYMS' scoring.
He also bagged two wickets to keep the pressure on as CYMS stumbled to be 6-87 at one point.
A 53-run partnership between Will Graham and Nathan Hawke got the Cougars back into the contest but Hawke's dismissal for 10 sparked the beginning of the end.
The final four wickets fell for just 21 runs as CYMS went from 6-142 to be all out for just 163.
Graham top-scored for the Cougars with 39, while Bansal made 32 before he was dismissed.

Newtown finished what they started on day one of their match against Souths, wrapping up first innings points quickly on day two of their match at Lady Cutler 3.
After rolling the Hornets for just 76, Newtown resumed on 4-62.
Graham Baker and Kel Blackett saw the Tigers home, with Blackett making 40 before some late hitting from Don Skinner (27) and Elliott Carlin (32no) saw them through to 159 when their last wicket fell.
Nathan Astri was the best of the Souths bowlers, taking 4-26 off a 10.4 over spell that included five maidens.
Souths were sent back in to bat but fared better in their second innings, making 6-141 after a shaky start.
Craig Edinborough took three wickets in four balls to have the Hornets 3-6 however they rallied, thanks mainly to 74 from Michael McCarthy, to finish 6-141 at stumps.
Edinborough finished with figures of 3-13 off six overs while Craig Pettit also claimed three wickets.
