Skillset Safer Driver Course lecturer Mike Jones is looking to reduce this alarming statistic.
Mr Jones and his son Michael run courses in an attempt to equip learner drivers with knowledge of the dangers of driving.
"We provide training to help young learner drivers to understand risks," he said.
The course is held in Dubbo, Bathurst, Orange, Parkes, Lithgow, Cowra and Mudgee.
It consists of a three-hour facilitated group discussion on how to manage risks on the road and a two-hour in-vehicle coaching session with a coach and another learner to develop low-risk driving strategies.
And it also provides learner drivers with 20 of their required log book hours.
But learner drivers are required to have reached a minimum of 50 log book hours before they can enroll in the course.
Mr Jones said too often learner drivers drive sensibly when they drive with a supervising driver, but take more risks when they drive unsupervised.
"Their risk factor increases when they drive alone," he said.
Learner drivers often walk away from the session feeling more confident, Mr Jones said.
"They fill out feedback forms and they are always happy with the information they have received," he said.
"I think it makes them realise the risks they can encounter when driving and how to avoid them."
