WELLINGTON-based boxer Joel Galea has lofty ambitions for 16-year-old fighter Oscar Beasley as the talented rookie prepares to take part in tonight's Christmas Fight Night at the Garden Hotel.
The amateur boxing night has been put together by local national lightweight champion Robert 'Gummy' Toomey and his Pound For Pound Gym but Beasley has been training at Galea's Hardnox Gym.
Galea has been impressed by what he's seen from Beasley and said he's more than capable of making an impact at the highest level.
"I'm looking to set him up for a national title next year. He has the right build, he's lean, tall and has a very good reach and his footwork has been impressive," he said.
The young welterweight has a real passion for the sport and he cites one of the world's best pound for pound boxers, Floyd Mayweather, as one of his heroes
"I like Mayweather, he's a legend," the young pugilist said.
"My footwork is getting better all the time and I enjoy working with Joel Galea at the Hardnox Gym in Wellington, he is also one of my heroes."
The year 10 student at Wellington High School has a 3-1 record so far and already has a country state title to his name.
"He's an unbelievable worker, he's here five days a week working out," Galea said.
The Wellington boxing professional is taking four fighters to Dubbo and is also preparing himself for fights in Sydney and Dubbo in February and March.
"I'll take Oscar with me so he can learn more about the big fight game. He really is a talent," Galea said.
The boxing action begins at the Garden Hotel at 7pm tonight and bouts on the card include NSW State and Regional men's and ladies titles. Tickets are available for $30 at the door.
