Mr McKay was awarded the Director's Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Program at the AIPT awards in Surfers Paradise last Friday.
The annual fitness industry event celebrates the exemplary contribution to the education and development of personal training professionals.
Mr McKay said he was "gobsmacked" and proud to win the award.
"It was a big surprise," he said.
"I was up against four other finalists, some from fairly major metro areas, so I didn't expect to win."
Mr McKay began his personal training career close to 20 years ago and has had experience in group exercise instructing in Pilates, Les Mills, Free Style and general fitness classes.
The fitness industry veteran said he brings a nutritionist and chiropractor into his teaching, to further the experience of the students.
"It was the little extras that I provide to my students that won me the award," he said.
Mr McKay is the AIPT Dubbo and Orange campus director and has great experience in the health and fitness industry.
He was approached to become a mentor for the AIPT course in 2010 when he ran Chizen Fitness.
After selling Chizen 18 months ago Mr McKay took up the position of the AIPT Dubbo and Orange campus director.
Mr McKay became involved with martial arts from a young age and is now a taekwondo head instructor fourth dan black belt.
This is one of the sources of the discipline and dedication Mr McKay said he seeks from his clients: "I also have some experience in the army reserve, so I'm very structured."
