Firefighters responded to reports of a possible fire about 11.20am but found no fire, a spokesperson for NSW Fire and Rescue said.
She said the air conditioning was being examined.
Shoppers took to social media to report alarms had gone off and that the store had been evacuated.
Ms Forrester said the technical issue was being fixed.
"The rest of the centre is running as normal and Big W's expected to reopen shortly."
