An enthusiastic group of 26 children are in the final stages of rehearsals for their quirky Christmas musical, The Midwife Crisis.
This is not only a first Christmas performance for many of the young performers, but a first for Macquarie Conservatorium.
Conservatorium director Vivienne Winther said the newly introduced Youth Music Theatre workshop had given children the chance to develop skills in singing, acting and movement.
She said the children had participated in fun training activities and had performed in their own shows.
The Midwife Crisis was described to be a new version of the traditional nativity play.
Directed by Camilla Ward and Raelene Bur, Ms Winther said the students had enjoyed working with the two local experts.
"The story has those recognisable characters from the Nativity store of shepherds and sheep, kings and camels, angels and inn keepers," Ms Ward said.
"But there is also a midwife who wants to help with the birth with her trusty donkey Steve."
Ms Ward said the audience should expect some plot twists.
Musical director Raelene Burn said they had seen a rise in numbers after the first Youth Music Theatre workshop performance in August.
"It seems this is an enjoyable and creative activity for kids that has really struck a chord," she said.
Performances are on Sunday, November 30 at 3pm and Monday, December 1 at 6pm, at the Macquarie Conservatorium on the corner of Darling Street and Bultje Street.
All tickets are $5 and are available from the Macquarie Conservatorium office and at the door.
