Elong Elong Rural Fire Service, police, paramedics and VRA personnel converged on the site five kilometres west of Elong Elong about 10am following reports a car had rolled over and at least one occupant was trapped.
They arrived to find the vehicle had left the road and hit a tree and immediately set about helping the driver out of the vehicle.
A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance Service said the woman suffered serious facial injuries and was conveyed by an ambulance rescue helicopter to Orange Health Service.
She was admitted to hospital and as of late yesterday remained in a stable condition, a Western Local Health District spokeswoman confirmed.
The highway was closed for a short time while the helicopter landed and it had re-opened by the afternoon.
Inspector Brad Johnston from Orana Local Area Command said the driver, a 58-year-old woman from Karuah, was the vehicle's sole occupant.
There were no other vehicles involved, he said, and an investigation would take place to try to establish what caused the crash.
