The Cancer Council NSW has invited residents of Dubbo and surrounds to next month's Saving Life: Vision for Change campaign launch at the Dubbo RSL Memorial Club.
Community programs co-ordinator for Cancer Council's western region Camilla Barlow said they would highlight to the NSW government five key issues affecting the Dubbo community when it came to cancer.
Saving Life: Vision for Change outlined important opportunities for the next state government to help beat cancer, she said. They included increasing palliative care services, access to care co-ordination, addressing the selling of tobacco, improving cancer services for Aboriginal people and addressing chemotherapy co-payments.
"We are encouraging community members to attend the launch at the Dubbo RSL where we'll hear stories from local people affected by cancer as well as key people who work in health services, they'll talk about how cancer affects our community and what we can do about it," she said.
Renowned former palliative care specialist and active palliative care campaigner Dr Yvonne McMaster will be a special guest speaker, sharing her views on what the next NSW government needs to do to address the shortfall in what she said was a crucial community service.
The free public event would be chaired by passionate local Brian Semmler and following talks on the five key topics there would be an open forum where guests could ask questions and discuss the issues raised.
"Vision for Change addresses problems that we know the community, cancer patients and their families face. For each problem we've outlined practical solutions that the next state government has the power to deliver, and that we know would make a difference to many people in NSW," Ms Barlow said.

o Saving Life 2015: Change Starts Here - Cancer Council NSW's vision for change outlines five opportunities for the next NSW government to reduce the number of people who hear the words 'you've got cancer', and ensure those who have cancer get the care they need. They are:
o Address the selling of tobacco to support people who are trying to quit, and encourage young people to live smoke free.
o Make sure that when Aboriginal people go to a cancer service they are cared for by an Aboriginal person
o Make sure that cancer patients who have their chemotherapy in a public hospital don't have to pay the co-payment
o Make sure that people with cancer, and their families, get the care they need, in a logical way, no matter where they live
o Make sure that every person who is dying from cancer has the best quality of life and if needed, a specialist palliative care team is there to care for them
