WHILE Dubbo's premier SCG Country Cup side powered its way into the next round of the competition on Sunday things were far different for the SCG Country Shield team as they went down to Mudgee by 24 runs at Lady Cutler 3.

The Dubbo side featured a talented and experienced core mixed with a number of promising younger players but they fell short against a Mudgee side featuring representative and former Dubbo trio Will Lindsay, James O'Brien and Steve Knight. Knight top-scored with 42 in Mudgee's total of 198 and then Lindsay fired with the ball, picking up key wickets and finishing with 4-29 from 10 overs as the home side was dismissed for 174.
"We were really happy to keep them under 200 at Lady Cutler, it was a really good effort." Dubbo all-rounder Steve Skinner said.
"We definitely should have chased it down, they did have a good bowling attack but our lower order showed if you applied yourself there were runs to get."
Mudgee have had mixed results in representative cricket this season but after the scalp of Dubbo, Jacob Edmunds said his side couldn't have been happier.
"It's a great feeling to beat Dubbo. I think it's the first time I've been in a side that's beaten Dubbo. I know it's a second side they fielded but they still had some really good players in there," he said.
"It was really a whole team performance. We each had a responsibility and stuck to it. I think that showed in our batting. We batted in stages. Blokes were putting their heads down for five or 10 overs and trying build partnerships up a bit."
Dubbo captain Mat Skinner started the game well for his side, picking up they big wicket of O'Brien with the score on just five but Mudgee fought back with the likes of Knight, Troy Kenny (38), Cameron Cox (30) and Michael Ford (21) all contributing.
CYMS off-spinner Stuart Naden was the best of the Dubbo bowlers, taking 3-17 while young guns Marty Jeffrey, Angus Cusack and Nick Cushan took one wicket each.
Dubbo were confident chasing a score below 200 on the batsman-friendly Lady Cutler 3 pitch but the top six could only manage 60 runs between them.
Ben Taylor (45) and Dan French (22) added 64 for the seventh wicket but Lindsay dismissed both and O'Brien picked up the final two wickets to seal the win.
"We were a bit shaky in the middle section and Dubbo got away a bit. But Will (Lindsay) came on and did the job for us. He bowled really well," Edmunds said.
Skinner said the experience would have done the younger players in the Dubbo side well but was disappointed his side couldn't advance further in the competition.
"Our top six didn't bat well, we all got a bit of a start but someone needed to go on and make a big one," he said.
Mudgee now play either Albury Colts or Griffith on December 14.
