In the lead-up to Christmas last year, retailers made an estimated $42 billion nationally, with an additional $15 billion spent in post-Christmas sales.
"We encourage everyone to shop as locally as they possibly can. It helps maintain the strength within the community and helps the Dubbo economy to grow, which in turn helps the goods and services," Dubbo Chamber of Commerce president Andrew Toole said.
Owner of Dubbo Home and Gifts Robyn West said shopping at local stores provides better customer service, as consumers are associating with people who already know what they like.
"It supports the local community, the money spent stays in the town," she said.
The store has already extended their trading hours to support the influx of customers- the majority of which Ms West said are locals- opening six days a week instead of the usual four.
"Some people have already finished. Just the odd person has come in and said 'this is the last thing I have to buy'."
Ms West has vast experience with Christmas shoppers with yesterday marking seven years since Dubbo Home and Gifts first opened.
"Dubbo is a great place to shop," she said.
