AFTER piling on the runs in the early stages of the 2014-15 season Asher Robins is looking to take his form to the next level during the coming days as part of the Western Zone Colts side contesting NSW Country Championships at Coffs Harbour.
Robins, who is joined in the Zone side by fellow Dubbo young gun Ben Patterson, has had a blistering start to the summer with a 69 against Parkes in the Western Premier League as well as 58, 53 and a brilliant 107 not out in his three Whitney Cup innings for club side South Dubbo.
The 17-year-old has come on in leaps and bounds in recent seasons and the huge improvement in his cricket makes this his debut in Western Zone colours.
Western open their campaign against Illawarra today and Robins is eager to take part in what he describes as a great opportunity.
"It definitely is, I was a bit surprised but it's always good to be called up to representative sides," he said.
"I'm excited, I love the game so any type of cricket I get to play is always good."
Robins forms an impressive batting line-up alongside the likes of Orange star Charlie Litchfield, Cowra's Conor Crook and Bathurst wicketkeeper-batsman Callum Hotham.
With plenty of talent in his side, Robins is keen to make the most of his good form.
"It's just started coming out of the middle, I've had a bit of luck but hopefully there's more runs to come," he said, before speaking about the challenge of playing at a higher level.
"I think it's going to be very hard, hopefully I get in and get the chance to see how the pitch plays and then put on some runs and do a job for the team."
While Robins is coming into the carnival in top form, he is backing Patterson to also have a bumper three days of cricket.
The Rugby tearaway has impressed with bat and ball this season and at under-19 level Robins expects him to be one of the standout bowlers.
"'Patto' will be a huge part of the team, anyone who that can bowl that quick and with that much aggression is always a big part of any team," he said.
Western's opponents for tomorrow depend on today's result and the two sides with best record after the first two days meet in the final on Sunday.
