Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition.
It is thought to have originated from the ancient Irish Celtic festival Samhain, when October 31 marked the official end of the summer harvest.
The Celts believed the worlds of the living and the dead crossed over.
They would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts.
Nowadays, Halloween is a commericalised holiday, which Old Dubbo Gaol tours and event officer Ruaan Van Der Wath is taking in his stride.
The Halloween Horror Night is a treat for daring visitors, Mr Van Der Wath said, combining both the open air cinema and the haunted gaol house tour into one ghoul-lightful evening.
Mr Van Der Wath’s final warning to visitors was “expect the unexpected”
“We want to give everyone the experience of cheap thrills,” he said.
“A lot of people, including myself, believe the gaol is haunted, so we’re really making the most of the eerie atmosphere.”
There will be two movies on show tonight, Hocus Pocus and the original Friday the 13th.
The Haunted Gaol House opens at 7pm with the Hocus Pocus screening kicking off at 8pm.
