AFTER the Dubbo City Speedway Club kicked off its racing season earlier this month, the club has now set its sights on even bigger events, culminating in the Australian Production Sedan title in April, the biggest event of the season.
With the track now being run by the Dubbo club momentum is building and it looks set to continue with club president Ian Boland, vice-president Wayne Alchin and Terri Alchin-Spears putting in plenty of hard work to make sure all events are well supported by the local community.
"Speedway is a market largely untapped by local business," Boland said.
"At most events it isn't a far stretch to say we would have 200 visitors converge on Dubbo that have to buy fuel, eat food, stay somewhere and spend a day in Dubbo.
"Come Australian-title time that number is set to lift to potentially 500 or more out-of-towners here for four to five days."
Dubbo City Speedway has become a major venue in NSW, evident by the two national titles the club will host this season, the Fender Bender national title for those who like cars crashing into each other deliberately and the Production Sedan title featuring side-by-side, three to four-wide Ford versus Holden racing in thrilling fashion from start to finish.
On the calendar the next event is on December 6, with a Northern Rivers Wingless Sprint series round the major event while there will also be class divisions including Junior Sedans, Production Sedans, Fender Benders, Open Sixes and (Club) Super Sedans.
Next year the Fender Bender national title will be held February 7, along with a round of the NSW Super Sedan series, Production Sedans, Junior Sedans, Open Sixes as well as the visiting Mod Lites.
March 14 will see a round of the NSW Fast Fours divisions (four-cylinder sedans), as well as a round of the Newcastle Street Stocker Series where drivers such as the Trent Keeler, who won the NSW title at Dubbo, return. All club divisions will also race on this day.
The season comes to a close on the Anzac Day weekend with the Australian Production Sedan national titles. The event starts on April 23 where practice at the venue and a calcutta to be held on the Friday and Saturday nights before racing.
This event alone should attract 50 competitors just for the one division with drivers from all across NSW and Queensland joined by competitors from Victoria and Western Australia while local Dubbo racers will also be a chance causing an upset against Tim Atkins, the current national champion, multiple national champion Stephen Laidlaw, NSW champion Frank Packer as well as a plethora of national rated West Aussies.
