Chade Sam Weyermann, 28, of Mudgee, told police he had left his driver's licence at home when he was stopped for a random breath test in Whylandra Street, West Dubbo, at 12.30pm on September 11.
An alcohol test returned a negative result. A computer check showed Weyermann had been disqualified from driving until May 2019.
Dubbo Local Court Magistrate Andrew Eckhold said statistics showed the largest number of people charged with driving while disqualified went to jail.
"The offence presents a real danger to the community," the magistrate said.
"You are looking at a potential jail sentence."
Magistrate Eckhold called up bonds previously imposed by Mudgee court and asked for an intensive correction order report to determine if Weyermann was suitable to serve a prison term in the community under supervision.
Under the terms of an intensive correction order Weyermann would be required to complete community service work and programs addressing offending behaviour.
He would be subject to monitoring, random home visits, drug and alcohol testing and a curfew.
Magistrate Eckhold adjourned the charge to December 3 for sentence.
A two-year driving disqualification was imposed.
