At 8am the sales embargo lifted on Apple's pair of brand new iPhones: the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and larger, 5.5-inch, "phablet" iPhone 6 Plus.

So popular was the new model, store manager Dane Stevenson said, that his store had almost sold out by about 9.15am. More stock would be arriving as soon as was possible, he said.

Mr Stevenson said the new version's larger screen was expected to be popular with iPhone users.

While the phone came in silver, space grey and gold, he said, the gold variety had been the most popular with customers at his store so far.

"Customers are saying they like the sleek feel of the new model," Mr Stevenson said.

"The battery life is improved, and the 4G is faster."

The iPhone 6 used the same chargers and connections as iPhone 5 did, he said.

People "ranging from schoolkids to grandparents" had already been in the store to pick up the upgraded models, Mr Stevenson said.

While most were from Dubbo, some had travelled from further afield, including Narromine.

An excited Courtney Moult was collecting her new iPhone 6 when the Daily Liberal visited the Telstra Store.

The 14-year-old Dubbo Christian School student said she had been excited for the past few weeks in the lead-up to the launch.

"I had an iPhone 4S before but now my new phone is even bigger and better than my Dad's," she said.

Courtney said she had chosen the gold phone because it looked "fancier" than the other colours.

"I'll probably use it mostly for social media, listening to music and calling people," she said.
