8.41: Making entertainment news this morning:
John Travolta has addressed claims made by his former pilot that they were romantically involved. Douglas Gotterba, who worked for the Pulp Fiction star's aircraft company in the 1980s, spoke out earlier this year about a relationship with Travolta, something the actor's lawyers denied before beginning legal proceedings alleging Gotterba breached a confidentially clause. Speaking to The Daily Beast, Travolta fielded questions about his rumoured homosexuality and the lawsuit.
A Police officer involved in the much-publicised confrontation with Django Unchained actress Daniele Watts has defended his actions. "She is lying," Los Angeles police sergeant Jim Parker told The Hollywood Reporter. The police officer says Watts has been making "malicious and false statements" about the event, and he has his own recording to prove it.
Hey girl! Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have welcomed a daughter. US Weekly is reporting that the firstborn for the couple arrived on Friday, September 12. The magazine also 'confirmed' 40-year-old Mendes' pregnancy in July. This was despite Mendes laughing off rumours that she was even pregnant.

7.56: Taking a closer look at today's front page story:
The husband of missing woman Roxlyn Bowie has told a court at Dubbo she was not scared of him because she had no reason to be.
John Bowie yesterday gave evidence at an inquest into his wife’s disappearance from their home at Walgett in 1982.
He faced intense questioning about their relationship, the night of her disappearance and the weeks after before coroner Mary Jerram, and rejected claims by former wife Anne Bowie that he was violent.
Earlier yesterday forensic document examiner Annalise Wrzeczycki from NSW Police had provided evidence about two letters purportedly written by Roxlyn announcing her intention to leave her husband.
Mr Bowie told the court that on the night of June 5, 1982, he had told his wife he was going to the pub. He said she said if he went, she wouldn’t be there when he got back, but that she had said that several times before.
- Daily Liberal Story: "Husband tells Inquest told Roxlyn Bowie's 'personality changed'" Thursday, September 18.

7.43: Making national news this morning:
NATIONAL: The federal government is considering fining social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter if they refuse to remove material deemed harmful to young people from their sites. Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Parliamentary Secretary for Communications Paul Fletcher on Wednesday said the federal government would legislate to create a new position of Children's E-safety Commissioner by the end of the year.
NATIONAL: Australia's elite special forces troops in Iraq will be gathering intelligence and targeting militants, either through ground operations or by directing air strikes, according to a senior defence force insider familiar with the SAS role. The claim runs counter to the impression being given by Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who continued to say on Wednesday that Australian forces would be "military advisers" to Iraqi and Peshmerga fighters and would "not themselves normally engage in actual combat".
ORANGE: Ronald McDonald House volunteers are confident the facility will open by the end of the year following a cash injection from Orange City Council on Tuesday night. In June, Canobolas Cottage board chair Joanne Lewis wrote to the council, asking the council to be guarantor on a $200,000 loan to complete the remainder of stage one.
BATHURST: detectives have joined forces with the elite police squad, Strike Force Raptor, and yesterday charged two members of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle club with allegedly threatening security staff at a Bathurst hotel. Chifley local area command crime manager Detective Inspector Luke Rankin said the two men were arrested and charged at Camden police station following an alleged altercation at The Oxford Hotel in the early hours of August 30.
NATIONAL: Compared with the money mere mortals take home, chief executive pay in Australia is the lowest it has been for 11 years. It is also far below the amount CEOs receive in the US. It is still high enough to severely handicap the ability of companies to participate in the debate about what sacrifices should be made to ensure Australia grows and prospers, however. You just cannot expect everyone to take you seriously when your top spokesperson pulls an eye-watering 63 times average earnings.
ORANGE: Christian School year 12 students were brought to tears yesterday as tributes to the group of 23 were delivered by younger students at their final assembly. The group was remembered as jokers that were always there to lend a hand.
BATHURST: Orange might be thinking about axing its New Year’s Eve celebrations, but Bathurst’s will be bigger than ever, according to mayor Gary Rush. Orange City Council decided to slash its sponsorship from $30,000 to $10,000 last month, citing budget constraints, according to the Central Western Daily. The CWD reported organisers, Manning PR and Events, wrote to council to say the event had not attracted the level of private sponsorship they had hoped for, and $20,000 was needed to ensure the event proceeded.
7.18: Taking a look at today's local news:
DUBBO: A partnership between Western College and Dubbo Community Men’s Shed is helping to make the jobless more attractive to potential employers. Seven adult students from Western College have been working with the Men’s Shed, helping them out with woodwork projects and furthering their own skills. Aged between 22 and 50 years-old, the students have been extremely eager and have even signed up as members of the shed.
DUBBO City Council is calling on residents to make submissions as it looks to form a policy on mining in the region, including the possible future extraction of coal seam gas. A draft strategy will be on display for the next month and council is encouraging everyone to provide their feedback.
DUBBO: An agitated man who swore, complained and interrupted Dubbo Local Court proceedings was denied bail when he was brought before Andrew Eckhold in handcuffs. Dewayne John Hill had been arrested hours earlier after bringing a 20cm folding knife into Dubbo police station and allegedly taking $230 in cash from a woman walking near the Garden Hotel. The 35-year-old from Dubbo was stirred up from the moment he was placed in the court dock by corrective services officers.
TRANGIE: Friday night saw Scott and Cath Vincent, of "Wirrigai" Narromine, take the Suncorp Top Field Award at the MCGA annual Awards Dinner, held at the atmospheric Showground Pavilion at Trangie. A crowd of 135 people from all facets of the cotton industry enjoyed the chance to celebrate and socialise for the night. This year saw a change in how the Crop Competitions were organised, with two awards, the Top Field and the Farm of the Year.
WELLINGTON: Wellington Police say they are winning the battle on targeting drug suppliers in the town following a weekend sweep which captured three offenders. Acting senior sergeant Brad Edwards says police enforced patrols of hot spots in the area.
OBERON: A man is assisting with inquiries after the death of a child at Oberon last month. Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to a house on Cunynghame Street about 1pm on Sunday 3 August 2014, where they found a three-year-old boy unconscious and not breathing. Officers performed CPR on the boy before he was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital, Westmead, in a critical condition. The child died on Wednesday 6 August 2014.
