Held at the Joan Sutherland Arts Centre at Penrith on August 31, the group proved to be too strong against Northern Sydney Youth Orchestra, Clefhangers Concert Band and Canberra City - John Agnew Band. The concert band won over the judges with three pieces; Nettleton, Alfred Reed's El Camino Real, and Jay Bocock's O Waly Waly.
The current band has more than 50 members with about one third being under 18 years old.
The remaining two thirds range between 18 years old to 30 years old, and 30 years and over.
At the recent championships the band fielded 46 players; one conductor, five percussion, 18 woodwind and 22 brass players.
The Dubbo District Band has been going strong for 135 years, since 1879.
The group originally formed as an orchestra, then as a brass band, then became a concert band in June 2008 when the Macquarie Wind Ensemble came on board. Stephen Smith has been the Musical Director of the Band since then and has consistently lifted the standard of the band such that it commenced competing in the NSW State Band Championships again last year (2013) where it came second in the "D Grade Concert Band" section.
