Road safety campaigner and truck driver Rod Hannifey said there is a perception trucks are to blame but the reality is much different.
Mr Hannifey, who drives for Rod Pilon Transport and is based in Dubbo, has made it one of his main goals to improve the relationship between all road users.
He said the best way for people to understand the challenges truck drivers face would be for everyone to be a passenger in a truck for a day. However, with that not being possible, he hopes people will listen to the advice of truck drivers.
More than 75 per cent of Australia's freight is carried by the trucking industry and the number of trucks on the road is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. The number of cars is also expected to rise as the population increases.
Mr Hannifey said people in Western NSW in particular should be aware, because of the large number of trucks in the area.
"It's beneficial for everyone if we can share the road. Truckies want to get home safely to their families, like everyone else."
