With star prop Chris Thompson fighting for his life in a Sydney hospital following a car crash on Thursday night, the Cowboys scored six tries to four and booked themselves a spot in next weekend's major semi-final against Dubbo CYMS.
Bravely, Thompson's brothers Nathan and Scott played in the match, with twin brother Nathan carrying the number 10 jersey onto the field prior to the game.
Wellington scored the first three tries of the match through hooker Richard Peckham, captain-coach Justin Toomey-White and five-eighth Lewis Stanley before Macquarie hit back 10 minutes prior to half-time through fullback Mason Williams to leave the score 16-6 at the break.
Realistically that was as close as Macquarie looked to winning the game, as the Cowboys marched on in the second stanza, scoring early through Trent Forrest before centre Chris Jones bagged a double to take the score out to 32-4.
Macquarie scored three late tries through Ash Conn, Jeremy Smith and Dylan Hill which made the scoreline more respectable at 32-24 when the full-time siren sounded.
"It's been a tough couple of days for us but we've worked hard to be ready for this game and it was a good result," Toomey-White said after the match.
"It was a massive effort for Nathan and Scott to play tonight, and that really lifted us. We wanted to win for Chris but we also wanted to win for them and their family as well."
Earlier, Dubbo Macquarie won through to the reserve grade major semi-final with a 30-16 win over Parkes, while CYMS beat Macquarie 28-16 in the under-18s qualifying final.
