Dubbo farmer and 2013 NSW Farmer of the Year winner Matthew Coddington, from Roseville Park, won first place in the August-shorn pairs.
Winston McDonald from Royalla Merino Stud, Queensland, won champion August-shorn fine wool ewe.
Students from 10 schools around the state showcased their knowledge of the merino industry in the junior judging competition.
Day two also saw Ross McGauchie from Terrick West Poll Merinos Victoria win junior March-shorn champion.
Mr McGauchie said he came to the National Show and Sale when it first began in the 1970s and had been coming to the event on and off for the past 15 years.
"We've been working our way up over the past few years. That's the nature of the job, to be competitive," Mr McGauchie said.
Coming to events like the Rabobank National Merino Sheep Show and Sale has allowed Mr McGauchie to make life-long friends from all over Australia.
"Even though it's a competition, everyone is friends. It's a great life," he said.
Mr McGauchie said the merino industry was in great shape.
"When you get on that stage, you're standing with the best in the industry," he said.
