Dubbo's Western Stars Men's 1s team has returned from the Hunter region with a shield displaying their status as the top team in the Northern NSW Indoor Cricket Superleague competition for 2014.
In a day filled with high level performances the Stars lost the major semi but returned to form in the final, blitzing Hunter to win 106-54 and be crowned champions.
Without skipper Steve Skinner, who was at home nursing a newborn son, Justin Knudsen was called into the team while Steve's brother Mat stepped up as captain.
The Stars lost to Hunter in the major semi, 110-116, but defeated Charlestown in the preliminary, 95-56.
The grand final, the Stars' third match of the day, was a lopsided affair and Wade Burrowes starring, scoring 21 runs and taking three wickets.
Aiden Bennewith was named the player of the final in Men's 1s as well and he also received an Allstar accolade, along with Mat Skinner, Jordan Peacock and Dan Holland. Fellow Dubbo Allstars were Tom Barber (Men's 2s), Eric Woolnough (Men's 3s) and Dave Glasson from Bathurst who plays in the Masters division.
The Men's 2s also performed well but lost at the semi-final stage. Al Horrocks, Brendan Powyer, Matt Knudsen and Andrew Waldon all impressed.
NSW Country teams were also selected and in the opens side Mat Skinner, Aiden Bennewith, Dan Holland and Dan French were called up for the team, with Dan Horrocks named as a shadow player.
Wade Burrowes and Tom Barber were named in the 20s Country team with Jackson Peacock as a shadow while the Masters grades (30s, 35s, 40s, 45s and 50s) will feature Steve Skinner, who was named captain of the 30s, Al Horrocks, captain of the 50s team, Dave Glasson, Brendan Powyer, Joel Johnston, Darren Davies and Graeme Allan.
In total, some 15 players from the Stars' ranks will represent NSW Country in the clash against City to be hosted at the Ultimate Indoor centre in Silverwater on the weekend of August 29 and 30.
