The former ambulance station site will eventually play host to a two-storey building that will host Macquarie Credit Union as its major tenant.
A sod-turning ceremony was held this week to mark the occasion.
Dubbo Mayor Mathew Dickerson and Macquarie Credit Union general manager Matthew Bow did the honours in the presence of current and retired credit union board members and representatives from council and local business.
"Macquarie Credit Union celebrates its 50th birthday this year and as the only locally-owned financial institution remaining in Dubbo it is time to show all the Dubbo community what we have to offer," Mr Bow said.
Cr Dickerson said he looked forward to seeing the credit union move into its new home.
Mr Bow said the existing premises in Hawthorn Street had served the credit union well but last year the membership was opened up to include all residents of the Dubbo local government area, prompting a need to move it closer to the CBD.
"It had to be the right spot," he said.
"We wanted to make sure that members' needs were met and access was the main concern. This location is ideal, and when Brett Anderson of BAWD Property Trust suggested the site, we jumped at it."
Construction will commence in the next few weeks and Macquarie Credit Union will take up residence early in the new year.
