Sixteen year 10 students from Dubbo College Delroy and South Campus who graduated from stage one of the Mulgabirra mentor program will go on to participate in the Reading for Life program.
Students trained in the program will assist Buninyong students with reading and maths groups, keep 'at risk' students focused, motivate younger students and advising younger students how to assist in issues such as bullying.
Reading for Life is funded by the Rali Foundation in Sydney.
The program will occur one day a week for six months and on completion students will gain an accredited Certificate I in Active Volunteering.
The Mulgabirra program selected students that were disengaged from school to be apart of a mentor program for younger students.
"Students now have a more positive attitude to learning, and have now developed learning strategies that assist them in the classroom," Anne Shortis manager of Education and Training Out West said.
"Data clearly shows an improvement in attendance, learning, behaviour and attitude at school."
Mulgabirra mentors explained the program spoke about their experiences with stage one of the program in front of guests Troy Grant MP, members of Dubbo and Buninyong schools and Sarah Axford co-ordinator of Learning for Life.
