The sign features information about the endangered trout cod, which can be found at Dubbo.
It is the first of three signs Dubbo Macquarie River Bushcare will install along the river around the walking and cycling paths during the next few weeks.
The other two signs will be installed at Shibble Bridge.
One contains information about a selection of critters that can be spotted around the river if one is quick and quiet enough and the other is about snags, the so-called coral reefs of freshwater rivers.
The signs are part of the Protect, Repair, Connect project, funded by the NSW government through its environmental trust, which aims to protect and improve the river habitat and help people understand issues affecting the river around Dubbo.
The signs were not the only thing that had been keeping the bushcare group busy, according to NSW Department of Primary Industries Fisheries regional manager Murray-Darling aquatic habitat rehabilitation Sam Davis.
"The bushcare group has been very busy controlling great swathes of environmental weeds such as willow, castor oil plant and green cestrum and filling the gaps by planting native trees and shrubs," she said.
"It's a joint effort and everyone is welcome to come along and get their hands dirty with working bees taking place every second weekend."
More information was available at the group's Facebook site or by contacting Rodney Price on 6881 1216.
The next working bee would be held on August 2 at 2pm.
