This was always going to be a game filled with passion as there has been a strong rivalry between these clubs since before some of the Grenfell players were born. Things were looking up on the previous week with no injuries occurring in the warm up.
Early on Grenfell dominated territory and field position and could have scored early but for a few misdirected passes. Mick D’Ombrain eventually was able to capitalise on this and open the scoring for Grenfell. This wasn’t converted but had Grenfell 5 – 0 up.
Soon after some of the rivalry was displayed with Stuart Hughes coping a stray kick to the head by a Condo player who got to watch the rest of the game from the sideline and possibly after the judiciary this week a few weeks from the stands. This had some of the Condo players seeing red so Stuart tried to calm down one of their players with a big kiss which if nothing else had many people in stitches of laughter.
No more points were added in the second half and Grenfell went to the break 5 – 0 up.
In the second half Grenfell continued to take it to their more fancied rivals. With the backs and forwards working the best they have together for some time and very few interchanges, Grenfell were able to show what they are capable of.
Mid-way through the second half Grenfell were able to extend their lead when Mark Hughes was able to put Mick through a gap to take Grenfell to an unbeatable 10 – 0 lead. Grenfell was able to keep Condobolin scoreless until the remaining minute when Condo scored and converted to make the full-time score 10 – 7.
Coach Craig Bembrick was more than happy with the effort as the team put in a full 80 minutes with very few mistakes.
Grenfell could not have had this win on a better day with the best crowd that we have had at home all year. This win now also virtually secures 4th spot and the home semi-final (to be on the weekend of 9-10 August) which they boys have been striving for.
Best for Grenfell on the day were Ant Dixon, Mick D’Ombrain, Matt Reid, Mark Hughes, Stuart Hughes, Matt Randall and Players Player and the Bill Eastaway Medal winner for 2014 was Kyle Anderson.
This weekend in the final comp round Grenfell will be heading over to West Wyalong. West Wyalong will no doubt be pumped up as they are in a tussle with Canowindra for the final semi-final spot. They will also be having their ladies day and sponsors day on the same day.
The team under the supervision of Griff will be taking the bus over leaving from the Cri. In case players weren’t listening or missed it at training, remember this is a pink themed bus trip. If you don’t don something pink, there will no doubt be some kind of fine in place.
As mentioned last week, sponsors day was held last weekend to thank all for their support this season. Whilst some were on the paddock playing, it was great to see many enjoying themselves during the game and some until well after.
