Dubbo City Council crews moved into Darling Street with 17 London plane trees in their sights at the weekend.
The giant specimens were marked for removal to allow ageing infrastructure to be renewed and 27 new plantings to take place between Wingewarra and Talbragar streets, a project that will take place during the next two years.
The works were progressing as planned, a council spokeswoman said yesterday.
The tree removal would be completed on Sunday, when Darling Street between Church and Wingewarra streets would be closed from 6.30am to 4.30pm, she said.
The tree stumps would be removed later as the project progressed, she said.
Signs were put in place to advise motorists of the works.
The council previously reported support from the Dubbo RSL Sub-branch and the Dubbo RSL Memorial Club for the project and that it was investigating options to recognise the significance of the original memorial plantings.
