At approximately 10.15pm police and emergency services arrived to a scene they described as 'horrific' and 'tragic'.
Many emergency workers said it was a heartbreaking accident.
There are reports the 19 year olds' Holden Astra may have swerved to the wrong side of the road and collided with a parcel truck heading in the opposite direction.
It is understood the man died on impact.
The truck driver was trapped in his vehicle with serious injuries.
Emergency services worked to extricate the driver and eventually he was taken to Wellington Hospital then airlifted by the medical retrieval helicopter to Orange Hospital with head and leg injuries.
It is believed his injuries included broken leg as well as head and internal injuries.
A source said the accident happened on an uphill section of the Mitchell Highway near Comobella Lane, approximately 15 kilometres west of Wellington.
The same stretch of road claimed the life of another young person just a few years ago.
The Mitchell Highway was blocked for several hours as a result of the accident and traffic diverted.
It was reopened early on Saturday morning.
Police from Orana Local Area Command are investigating the cause of the crash and their inquiries are ongoing, a spokesperson for police said.
They will prepare a report for the coroner.
