Each week staff members voluntarily donate a dollar to a charity and since the program started running, they have donated almost $30,000 to a number of worthy causes including Camp Quality, Orana Early Childhood Intervention and cancer research.
It is that commitment to helping the community that has earned Dubbo RSL four nominations in the 2014 Clubs and Community Awards, which will be presented at a gala night on May 9.
"When staff start we ask them if they would like to donate a dollar to charity and the response has been fantastic. It's a small amount to give away but it really adds up. The staff have now raised over $28,000, which is fantastic," Dubbo RSL HR manager Rebecca Zaia said.
"I heard someone who started recently volunteer to donate $3, the staff have really embraced it."
As well as Heart of the Community, the club has also been nominated for the Education, Emergency Services and Environment awards.
At the inaugural Clubs and Community Awards last year, Dubbo won the Community Spirit Ambassador of the Year gong.
ClubsNSW CEO Anthony Ball said the Clubs and Communities awards are a way for clubs like Dubbo RSL to be recognised for helping the cities and towns they are based in.
"When you hear about a club contributing to the community, I know some people think it's just about providing a cheque," Mr Ball said. "By telling their stories, clubs can show the local community that it's more than just handing over a cheque. For some clubs, it's about being the local child care centre or fundraising for medical equipment that is desperately needed."
Other Central West Regional finalists were Club Mudgee for their youth work and Springwood Sports Club for their contribution during the 2013 Blue Mountains Bushfires.
