Cooking kosher potato starch cupcakes for Passover - which are likely to end up as treats on Easter tables around Sydney - was a fun way of breaking down barriers and realising the similarities between all children.
This year, Easter coincides with the Jewish festival of Passover as well as Orthodox Easter.
On Thursday, three groups of children from Out of School Hours care (OOSH) visited Our Big Kitchen, the community kitchen run by Rabbi Dovid Slavin and his family in Bondi. Alongside Jewish children, the groups baked, took part in activities and learnt the meaning of kosher.
Rabbi Slavin said the children took home some of their decorated cakes for themselves and their families - and some to give away.
Rabbi Slavin said the kitchen, which is kosher and halal-certified, had created a lot of opportunities for people to mix socially and get to know each other.
''Our real focus is on social responsibility,'' he said.
