A change to make the funding system demand driven could enable more Dubbo students to attend university.
Under the new system local communities would be involved in focusing on areas of need in a region and offer more places in courses that meet those needs.
Charles Sturt University (CSU) has been able to increase student numbers using the system without a fall in quality.
CSU said the system provided better access for students and encouraged universities to provide courses to suit student and workforce needs.
Any move to boost university as an option for Dubbo's young would be widely welcomed. Less than eight per cent of the working age population has a degree. Similar figures apply for those studying now.
While a focus on community needs and greater access are welcome, there is rarely a conversation about regional students that does not touch on a key disadvantage for them.
That is the high cost of attending universities far from home. Canberra should make doing something about that issue a top priority.
