Two police officers have been injured after an explosion at a rural property in Derrinallum on Saturday.
Police suspect a man at the house who they intended to arrest has died as a result of that explosion.
Police attended the property located on the Hamilton Highway around 7pm Friday night to undertake a planned arrest of a man.
The man was wanted in relation to a violent incident that occurred earlier in the week.
Upon arrival local police, along with specialist units tired to negotiate with the man after he became irrational and threatened self-harm.
Trained negotiators established communication with the man and continued speaking with him for several hours.
Around 1.30am Saturday, there was an explosion at the property.
Two male police officers, both from a specialised squad were injured.
One officer was transported to the The Alfred by air ambulance and the other was taken to Geelong Hospital. Both are now in a stable condition.
The Bomb Response Unit is assisting with the investigation and it is believed there are potentially other explosive devices within the property.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad and Professional Standards Command will wait until such time as the scene has been declared safe by the Bomb Response Unit before the crime scene can be processed.
The Hamilton Highway is expected to remain closed for the next 48 hours.
The condition of the man remains unknown however it is suspected he died as a result of an explosion on the property.
Saturday 10.40am: Police have set up a command site at a neighboring house several hundred metres east of the scene.
Dozens of police cars and the police helicopter are on site.
Nearby residents say they believe the house has been completely destroyed. A shed behind the house has been described as "a tangle of metal".
The sides have blown off in the blast and the twisted frame is all that remains.
Police have yet to confirm the fate of the man at the affected house.
A second house on the property remains standing.
Several horses that were in a nearby paddock are believed to have been injured by flying shrapnel.
The blast scene is about two to three kilometres west of Derrinallum.
EARLIER SATURDAY: TWO police officers have been injured following an explosion at a property in Derrinallum on Saturday morning.
Police were attempting to negotiate with a man who was threatening self-harm when the explosion occurred around 1.30am.
The situation is ongoing. The Hamilton Highway is closed at Darlington, west of the crime scene, and traffic is being diverted.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said one of the officers received head injuries and was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The second officer was taken by ambulance to Geelong Hospital to be treated for bruising, cuts and abrasions.
No one else was injured in the blast.
The property is located about one kilometre west of Derrinallum opposite Mount Elephant.
CFA crews were called to the scene about 1.30am after receiving reports of a house on fire.
A nearby resident said it was believed a man in the house detonated explosives.
The police bomb squad is on scene and the Hamilton Highway remains closed between Darlington and Lismore.
"It's pretty traumatic," the resident told The Standard.
Police have been unable to enter the house to check on the welfare of the man and his condition remains unknown.
Professional Standards Command has been notified.
