Macquarie Raiders captain-coach John Grey described Sunday afternoon at Apex Oval as "an awesome day for the club" with three hugely promising performances against the Wellington Cowboys in front of a healthy crowd.

The Raiders first grade side defeated a physical and strong Cowboys side 38-30 while the understrength reserves drew 18-all and the under-18s showed they would be a real force in 2014 as they destroyed the Wellington juniors 60-0.
"The takings at the gate and the canteen were good and for the under-18s to win that big at that level is a big achievement," he said.
"There's a few blokes there I've already highlighted as possible first graders this year while our reserves was a massive effort considering a lot of them have hardly played footy the last few years and there were only 13 players on the day."
In the day's main game the Raiders continued to improve from their first two trials against a Wellington team that impressed Grey, despite his team still not playing at their best.
"That was pretty close to our dedicated first grade side so it was really good and that Wellington team was one of the most competitive I've seen in recent season," he said.
"I was happy with our performance but there were a lot of negatives and things to work on but it was a big improvement from our loss to Mudgee a few weeks ago."
The Cowboys' major off-season signing Chris Thompson didn't take part and Grey said the Cowboys would be one to watch this season but with a few regulars missing from his own side, he said it was a real positive to have players step up early in the year.
"The biggest area we're happy with is our depth, we've got a whole lot of competition for all spots and there's some real pressure on blokes who have generally been first graders so that depth should help us through the season if we have any injuries or suspension," he said.
"It will really help our momentum going from week to week."
Grey, who scored two tries in the match, praised the work of forwards Anthony Egan-Smith, whom he described as "outstanding", and Tom McGann, while he also said new signing Chris Daly played a great match.
"Chris Daly just popped up everywhere at the back and he's just like a pitbull when it comes to chasing the ball at the back and that's something great for a fullback," he said.
Ash Widders, Matt Lane, Mason Williams and Egan-Smith were the other try scorers along with Grey while Williams kicked five from six conversions.
Reigning Group 11 Player of the Year Justin Toomey-White, Adam West, Kieran Brien, Richard Peckham crossed the line while Norman West scored twice and added three conversions.
With a win under the belt and still plenty of room for improvement, Grey said confidence was high leading into this Friday night's trial match with rivals CYMS.
"It was a hard hit-out and there wasn't much defence as you can see by the score but it was physical as always and we know it's a short turnaround but the improvements we need to make are at the forefronts of our mind and we know exactly what we need to do," he said.
