The assailant tried to rob a service station on the Newell Highway just after midnight but after failing to gain access because of the after-hours door lock, he fled the scene.
About 10 minutes later he appeared at a food outlet brandishing the same weapon and after threatening people inside, he made off on foot with a sum of money.
Orana Local Area Command duty officer Mitchell Croyston said police were investigating the incident and were hopeful of catching the robber.
"A man has attempted to rob a service station with a length of pole and a knife attached to it, similar to a spear, but he wasn't able to gain access because the doors were locked and had to be activated from the inside," Inspector Croyston said.
"A short time later the same person has attacked a food outlet, threatening employees and customers. He demanded and received money and left.
"The man is described as Caucasian and is approximately 170 centimetres tall. He was wearing dark long pants, work boots and a dark hooded jumper with a pattern on the front. He was also wearing a dark balaclava."
Inspector Croyston said employees and customers at the food outlet were unharmed during the hold up.
Police are making enquiries and are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident.
