The 87-year-old community volunteer has been participating in a walking group and “wellness” exercise class for more than 20 years.
She credits the regular activity with helping keep her body and mind in good shape.
“For an old girl I don’t think I do badly,” Mrs McArdle said.
“Macular degeneration has stopped me doing some of the things I enjoy but I still participate in as much as possible without causing myself or others injury.”
On Tuesdays Mrs McArdle can be found in the David Palmer Centre at Lourdes Hospital leading a seniors exercise class from 2pm to 3pm.
On Thursday mornings she is at the intersection of Macquarie and Tamworth streets ready to stride off with the walking group she established with husband Eric in the 1990s.
“We walk along the Tracker Riley path where there is no traffic to worry about. We enjoy the outdoors, the sunshine, the exercise and the all important benefits of socialising and conversation.
“In the warmer weather we walk from 7.30am to 8.30am. We’ve just switched over to the winter time of 8am to 9am.”
