It has been a topsy-turvy 2013-14 for both sides as the much fancied Macquarie line-up struggled with injuries and failed to fire during the first half of the season while Newtown surprised many by beating Rugby on their way to sitting comfortably in the all important third spot at Christmas.
However the fortunes of both sides changed in the new year with Newtown suffering a loss of players and form while Macquarie, led from the front by captain Jason Green, began to show some of the class many expected.
The Blues' spot in the top three seemed a sure thing leading into the final round but Newtown found some of their pre-Christmas form as they sealed first innings points against CYMS last week.
While Macquarie just need a win over defending premiers Colts to seal third spot today, the Tigers know an outright victory gives them every chance of returning to the Whitney Cup finals for the first time in close to ten years.
In other action on Saturday, Rugby will be looking to fight back and claim a win over Souths to ensure they walk away with the minor premiership while Colts will be hoping for a Rugby loss and a highly unlikely outright win over the Blues to steal the top spot.
