Colts batted first on Saturday and made 220, thanks largely to Chris Morton's 92, before Wade Potter took two wickets late in the day to leave Souths 2-15 in reply.
It was yet another escape act by Colts, who rallied from 5-112 at one stage with Berry's men left to lament a missed opportunity.
"We bowled really well for most of the day but we just couldn't get 'Morto'," Berry said.
"He anchored the innings well for them.
"He just knocked them around and kept the scoreboard ticking over for them.
"Late in the day we got a bit tired probably, because of the heat, and then the late wickets when we were batting didn't help.
"But we will just have to be patient and build partnerships next week. If we do that I think we can still give it a shake."
Berry was the standout for his side on Saturday, snaring four wickets in a marathon bowling spell of 19 overs in the oppressive conditions.
Matt Finlay took 3-44 off his 17 overs while Adam Carr was rewarded with 2-64, also off 17 overs.
Now the pressure is on with the bat, with Josh Williams (8no) and Jack Wells (4no) first up at the crease this week after Carr (2) and Justin Knudsen (0) fell late on day one, and Asher Robins retired hurt due to illness.
It is expected that Robins will be able to bat this week and he'll be hoping to get among the runs.
"The first session will be vital next week," Berry said.
"If Jack and Josh can build a bit of a partnership and we don't lose early wickets then we're a show.
"I think if you can be patient and build your innings, runs will come. 'Morto' showed that on Saturday and it's just a matter of us doing the same thing."
