Pake Justin Skuthorpe appeared on bail in Dubbo Local Court.
Magistrate Andrew Eckhold said it was in the interests of everyone for Skuthorpe to engage in rehabilitation.
"You have an opportunity with MERIT," the magistrate said.
The Magistrate's Early Referral Into Treatment (MERIT) program allows defendants with substance abuse problems to work towards rehabilitation as part of the bail process.
Participants are closely case-managed by the MERIT team and the court receives regular progress reports.
The charges were adjourned to January 15.
