Dubbo Kumiai-Ryu Martial Arts students excelled at the 24th Kumiai-Ryu National Championships held at Cowra on November 23.
A contingent of 20 students competed from the Dubbo dojo in a field of more than 150 competitors from NSW and QLD with events covering kata, point sparring, martial arts tricking, grappling and restricted continuous sparring.
Dojo instructor Shidoin Daniel Anderson said he was immensely proud of the hard work and courageous effort his students showed at the weekend with all showing great martial arts spirit and sportsmanship.
"The guys put a lot of effort in so it is good to see them get the rewards.
A lot of them are training two to three times a week, as well as a few hours training at home and any other sport they do so it requires discipline," Anderson said.
"I am proud of everyone's achievements at nationals."
Particular mention goes to Sensei Ben Bunt who at 19 years of age took home four national titles, including the men's open point sparring, men's under 85kg continuous sparring, men's under 95kg continuous sparring and the men's open continuous sparring.
Overall the Dubbo dojo took home 41 medals including 14 national titles in various events and divisions.
Anderson said he was pleased with the level of success achieved but he stressed to his students the importance of having fun
"As soon as the kids got home I asked them if they had enjoyed themselves and they said they had. I told them 'it doesn't matter if you won four or five medals or no medals. The main thing is that you had a good time'."
Kumiai-Ryu will host their end of year gradings at Victoria Park next Saturday and 140 students will be in attendance.
