A rock was lying on the ground, blood was smeared on a cupboard and goods worth $10,000 were gone.
Ten months later DNA analysis linked the blood to Stephen Ryan, a man with a drug habit who was already serving a jail sentence for property offences.
Ryan was charged with break, enter and steal.
The 25-year-old was hopeful of attending a residential drug rehabilitation centre when he appeared in Dubbo Local Court via video link from Bathurst Correctional Centre.
His solicitor said the offence had occurred when Ryan was out of control with his drug habit.
"It was a spur of the moment opportunistic offence," the solicitor said.
"He has expressed remorse and has been arranging a position in a rehabilitation centre.
"We ask that the court consider a jail sentence with at least partial concurrency with the sentence he is already serving.
"We ask for a finding a special circumstances due to his need for drug rehabilitation.''
Magistrate Brian van Zuylen imposed an 18-month jail sentence backdated to February 2. He set a non-parole period of 12 months.
Ryan was ordered to pay compensation of $10,096.95.
